Kinetics of Iron Sulfide and Mixed Iron Sulfide/carbonate Scale Precipitation in Co2/h2s Corrosion

چکیده
Glass cell experiments were conducted to investigate kinetics of iron sulfide and mixed iron sulfide/carbonate scale precipitation in CO2/H2S corrosion. Weight gain/loss (WGL) method was used to investigate the scale formation using X65 carbon steel as substrates. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray Diffraction methodology (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Electron Probe Micro-analyzer (EPMA) were used to analyse the scale. The experimental results show that the corrosion products formed in CO2/H2S system depend on the competitiveness of iron carbonate and mackinawite. At high H2S concentration and low Fe concentration, mackinawite was the predominant scale formed on the steel surface. At low H2S concentration and high Fe concentration, both iron carbonate and mackinawite form. It was also found that ferrous ions forming mackinawite scale mainly come from Fe released from the steel surface.

A Mechanistic Model of H2s Corrosion of Mild Steel
Glass cell experiments were conducted to investigate the mechanism and kinetics of mild steel corrosion in H2S environments which is accompanied by iron sulfide scale formation. By using the weight change method, the rates of corrosion and scale formation were found. It was also concluded that mackinawite is the predominant type of iron sulfide that formed on the steel surface under the test co...
متن کاملRole of Conductive Corrosion Products in the Protectiveness of Corrosion Layers
In carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion of steels, the bicarbonate ion (HCO3) is simultaneously the buffer for carbonic acid (H2CO3), the source of iron carbonate (FeCO3) precipitation, and the product of the cathodic reaction. In addition to spatial separation of the production of Fe2+ and HCO3, galvanic coupling between the steel and cementite (Fe3C) layers is the principal cause of internal acidif...
متن کاملBasics Revisited: Kinetics of Iron Carbonate Scale Precipitation in Co2 Corrosion
Glass cell experiments were conducted to understand kinetics of iron carbonate scale formation in pure carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion of mild steel. Weight gain and loss (WGL) method was used as a direct approach to investigate kinetics of scale formation. The experiments were done at the temperatures of 60C to 90C, and an iron carbonate supersaturation range of 12 to 350. It is found that the ...
متن کاملUse of hydrochloric acid for determinining solid-phase arsenic partitioning in sulfidic sediments.
We examined the use of room-temperature hydrochloric acid (1-6 M) and salt solutions of magnesium chloride, sodium carbonate, and sodium sulfide for the removal of arsenic from synthetic iron monosulfides and contaminated sediments containing acid-volatile sulfides (AVS). Results indicate that acid-soluble arsenic reacts with H2S released from AVS phases and precipitates at low pH as disordered...
متن کاملModeling the Formation of Iron Sulfide Scales Using Thermodynamic Simulation Software
A program has been developed for generating stability diagrams that concisely represent the thermodynamic state of multicomponent, multiphase aqueous systems in wide ranges of temperature and component concentrations. The diagrams are based on a thermodynamic model that combines the Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers equation of state for standard-state properties with a solutions nonideality model based...
